Egg tarts - Hong Kong's Local Snacks

Egg tart is a pastry-crust filled with egg custard and baked. This popular Hong Kong snack probably originates from English custard cakes. Some are made with cookie dough while others have a flaky pastry.

As early as the 1940s, the high-end Western restaurant in Hong Kong introduced egg tarts, which began to appear in ‘Cha Chaan Teng’ cafes (tea restaurants) in the 1950s. The egg tarts in the early tea restaurant are relatively large, and an egg tart can serve an afternoon tea meal. Since the 1990s, the number of tea restaurants with their own bakeries has gradually decreased, most order egg tarts from the bread factories. Egg tarts are served in most bakeries. Egg tarts are one of Hong Kong's authentic foods. It is a habit of many Hong Kong people to have an egg tart and a cup of milk tea in the afternoon tea. To count the favorite local snacks of Hong Kong people, the egg tarts must be on the list.
