The pineapple bun is a sweet bread with no fillings. Traditionally, pineapple bun contained no pineapple and earned its name because its golden brown, checkered top resembles the skin of a pineapple. The top half of the bun is made from cookie-type dough, which gives its crispy texture, while the bottom is made from Chinese-style bread dough, which tends to be softer and sweeter than Western bread.
This popular Hong Kong snack was probably created as Hong Kong people thought the ordinary bread in early years did not taste rich enough, therefore, a sweet, crispy top is added to it. The crispy skin of the pineapple bun is usually made of sugar, eggs, flour and lard. The pineapple bun looks similar to the Japanese melon bun and Hong Kong-style Mexican bun.
Pineapple buns are one of the most popular breads in Hong Kong. Almost every bakery in Hong Kong sells pineapple buns. The price of pineapple buns is generally cheaper than other breads with fillings, but it tastes richer than that without fillings, so it is very popular among Hong Kong people. Many bakeries and tea restaurants serve warm pineapple buns with cold pat of butter inserted into them.
